Does Your Gravel Driveway Need a Refresh or New Gravel?

Published July 16, 2026

Gravel driveway repair and surface restoration project in the Pee Dee area

A rough-looking gravel driveway does not automatically mean you need a full load of new rock. In many cases, the gravel is still there—it has simply shifted, packed down, washed toward the edges, or developed potholes and ruts.

When a driveway refresh may be enough

A refresh focuses on working with the material already on the driveway. The surface may be loosened, redistributed, reshaped, and smoothed to restore a more even driving surface.

Signs that additional gravel may be needed

New material is more likely to be necessary when the existing gravel layer is too thin to reshape effectively or when the base is exposed across large sections.

Drainage matters as much as the gravel

Water is one of the biggest reasons gravel driveways deteriorate. Simply covering a drainage problem with more stone may provide a temporary improvement, but the same washouts or potholes can return. The shape of the driveway, surrounding grade, and direction of water flow should be considered before deciding what work is appropriate.

The best answer usually comes from an on-site look

Photos can help, but the condition of the existing gravel, depth of the damaged areas, access, drainage, and size of the driveway all affect the recommendation. PBM Land Services can evaluate the surface and explain whether reshaping the material already present is practical or whether additional gravel should be included.
