How to Maintain a Gravel Driveway

Gravel driveways are durable and practical, but they are not maintenance-free. Traffic, rain, turning tires, weeds, and normal settling gradually move the stone and change the shape of the surface.

Address small potholes before they grow

A pothole usually gets worse every time a tire passes through it or water collects inside it. Filling only the visible hole with loose gravel may not last because the compacted edges and underlying depression remain. Proper repair often requires loosening and reshaping a larger section around the damaged area.

Keep water moving away

A gravel driveway should not act like a shallow ditch. Standing water and water flowing directly down the tire paths can carry fine material away and create ruts. Watch the driveway during or immediately after a heavy rain so you can see where water collects or crosses the surface.

Avoid spinning tires and sharp turns

Fast acceleration, hard braking, and turning the steering wheel while a vehicle is stationary can push gravel into piles and expose the base. This is especially noticeable near road entrances, parking areas, and turnaround points.

Control weeds before they take over

Weeds and grass trap soil and organic material, making it easier for more vegetation to grow. Early control is easier than trying to recover a heavily overgrown gravel surface. The right approach depends on whether the growth is scattered, concentrated along the edges, or covering most of the area.

Plan periodic grading or refreshing

There is no single schedule that fits every driveway. A lightly used residential driveway may go much longer between maintenance visits than a busy shared drive or commercial gravel lot. Heavy rain, poor drainage, delivery trucks, and soft ground can also increase how often maintenance is needed.

Know when maintenance has become repair

If the driveway has deep ruts, widespread bare soil, major drainage problems, or areas that remain soft and muddy, simple smoothing may not be enough. An evaluation can help determine whether the existing material can be recovered or whether additional work and gravel are needed.
