Preparing an Area for an Above-Ground Pool

Published July 16, 2026

Skid steer grading and leveling a residential area for site preparation

An above-ground pool needs a level, stable area. Even a small elevation difference can place uneven pressure on the pool walls and change the water depth from one side to the other.

Start with the pool manufacturer’s requirements

Before site work begins, confirm the exact pool diameter or dimensions, required clearance, base material recommendations, and installation instructions. The prepared area often needs to be wider than the pool itself so installers have room to work and the finished site has proper clearance.

Remove obstacles and unsuitable surface material

The area may need grass, roots, debris, small brush, or soft organic material removed. Building directly over vegetation can lead to settling as that material breaks down. Large roots and buried objects can also interfere with leveling and future pool use.

Cut high areas instead of simply filling low areas

For many pool sites, lowering the high side to match the low side creates a more stable result than building the entire low side up with loose soil. The exact approach depends on the slope, soil, drainage, and manufacturer’s requirements.

Think about drainage before the pool arrives

Water should move away from the pool area rather than collect around the walls or equipment. Homeowners should also plan for water displaced during swimming, filter maintenance, heavy rain, and eventual draining of the pool.

Confirm equipment access

Gates, fences, septic systems, overhead lines, landscaping, and soft yards can affect whether equipment can safely reach the work area. Sharing measurements and photos before the estimate helps identify possible access issues.

Coordinate the grading and installation schedules

The installer may have specific tolerances or may require a particular base layer after grading. Confirm who is responsible for sand, stone dust, blocks, foam, or other materials. Clear coordination prevents duplicated work and last-minute surprises.

Get the area evaluated before installation day

PBM Land Services can assess the slope, access, approximate work area, and grading needs. The final pool installation must still follow the pool manufacturer’s instructions and any applicable local requirements.
