Why Gravel Driveway Potholes Keep Coming Back

If you are filling the same pothole every few months, the problem usually is not the pothole itself. It is what is happening underneath your driveway.

Potholes form when water settles into a low spot, softens the material below the surface, and allows vehicle traffic to push gravel out of place. Every rainstorm and every passing vehicle can make the weak spot worse until a small dip turns into a much larger problem.

That is why simply dumping fresh gravel into the hole usually does not last. Unless the drainage, base, or grading issue is corrected, the new gravel can get pushed aside and the pothole comes right back.

Depending on the condition of the driveway, proper repair may include:

• Removing loose or muddy material
• Regrading the affected area
• Improving drainage so water moves away from the driveway
• Compacting the base before adding new gravel
• Adding fresh gravel where the surface has thinned

When those steps are skipped, the pothole is likely to return after the next heavy rain or repeated vehicle traffic.
